In 1939, as Australia's film industry collapses, controversial filmmaker Rupert Kathner (a man with a criminal background and a lack of technical skill) decides to soldier on in his quest to keep Australian cinema alive. Alec Morgan's documentary blends actual clips of Kathner (along with his girlfriend, cinematographer Alma Brooks) with dramatized sequences, as the two scheme, steal, battle the law and seek funding from investors they refer to as angels -- all in the name of the cinema.
