Born in Brooklyn, New York on July 18, 1940, Joe Torre grew up playing baseball under the tutelage of his older brother, Frank. By 1996, Joe had established an 18-year career as a ballplayer and 14 years as a manager, but had never played or managed in a world series. Even so, he is hired by New York Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, to manage the team. Joe begins the year by returning to his Brooklyn roots and reuniting with his family. Joe’s wife, Ali, is pregnant, and his brothers, Rocco and Frank, and sisters, Rae and Sister Marguerite, are there to celebrate the impending birth. During spring training, Joe hires former manager and Big League veteran, Don Zimmer, along with pitching guru, Mel Stottlemyre, to help guide the team. Stottlemyre works with former Cy Young winner, Dwight “Doc” Gooden, who is attempting a comeback from personal problems. The season begins badly with the Yankees losing ten of their first 21 games. Joe soon receives devastating news: his brother, Rocco, has died from a heart attack and Frank has been hospitalized. The doctor informs Joe that Frank needs a new heart and it may take months to find a donor—precious time that Frank may not have. Despite numerous Yankees injuries and his own personal problems, Joe must keep himself and his players focused and motivated. His determination pays off when, in the fall, the Yankees clinch the division title and go on to win the American League pennant as Joe prepares to manage his first World Series. Joe helps care for Frank as he awaits the transplant to save his brother’s life, and at the same time, works to make his dream of being part of a winning team come true as he leads an often-injured, underdog Yankees team to the World Series Championship. On the eve of the World Series’ game six, Joe learns that the doctors have found a donor for Frank. The next day, Joe leads his team to victory to make the New York Yankees the champions of the baseball world.
