Bump In The Night, a psychological suspense movie, graphically details every parent’s nightmare when an eight-year old boy is kidnapped by a pedophile. Martha “Red” Tierney, played by Meredith Baxter-Birney, was a prize-winning investigative journalist for the New York Times. After her divorce from Patrick (Wings Hauser), a successful novelist, her out-of-control drinking destroyed her career and her self-esteem. One morning, her bright eight-year-old son Jonathan heads for a secret meeting with his estranged father but instead meets Lawrence Miller (Christopher Reeve), a charming 40-ish former college professor with a dubious past. Lawrence convinces Jonathan that he will take him to his father. Jonathan becomes suspicious when Lawrence takes him to an Upper West Side apartment full of video equipment and, now terrified, he hides in the attic while Lawrence methodically searches for him. Jonathan’s kidnapping jolts Martha into sobriety and forces a difficult reconciliation with Patrick. Experienced cop Mooney and his young partner Jeff are onto the case but there are few clues. What none of them know is that Jonathan was “supplied” to Lawrence by Cheryl, a depraved distributor for a child pornography ring headed by Ben Nicolaides—and that Cheryl plans to use Jonathan in a film to be shot that night. Martha uses her reporter’s skills to find her son. The trail leads her to Cheryl but it is too late: Nicolaides, angry at her meddling, has just murdered Cheryl and is now searching for Lawrence and Jonathan to silence them also. His and Martha’s search converge when they both discover Jonathan’s whereabouts, and the final tension-packed scenes are a race between the two while Jonathan engages in his own battle with the disturbed Lawrence. At the end, reunited again as a grateful family, Martha vows to continue her battle with alcoholism with the same vigor and faith she used to save her son from the kidnappers.
